Derek K. Arnson

Chief Arnson was appointed Chief of Police for the City of Nogales in 2012.  He is a native of Arizona and holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University.  He is a recent graduate of the United States Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA receiving a Masters Degree in Security Studies/Homeland Security.  He is a graduate of both the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Association and the Northwestern University - School of Police Staff and Command and will graduate from Arizona State University a Certified Public Manager CPM December 2014. Chief Arnson has enjoyed over 22 years of police service and has over 14 years of supervisory, command and executive leadership experience.  He is a native of Arizona and is fluent in the Spanish language.  Chief Arnson is an adjunct professor at the Santa Cruz County Provisional Community College District here in the City of Nogales and teaches Criminal Justice courses.  He is an advocate for victims of crime, especially women and children.  Chief Arnson is a leader in bringing education and attention to domestic and sexual violence.  He has partnered with our neighbors in Mexico to bring about the first ever "Start by Believing" bi-national campaign to end sexual and domestic violence.  He is also a nationally appointed board member of the Civil Rights Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Chief Arnson strongly believes in giving back to the community in the form of service.  He has been actively involved in many service organizations such as; Boy Scouts of America, Rotary International, Special Olympics, and the Boys and Girls Club.  Additionally, Chief Arnson sits on appointed boards both in the State of Arizona and within the local community.  Recently, he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Nogales Unified School District Governing Board.

Chief Arnson was a member of both the Eastern Arizona College and Northern Arizona University Football Teams.  He has been a private pilot and owner of aircraft for over 24 years.  He married his college sweetheart and has two children.  His oldest, Sydnee, is attending college while his son, DJ, is in the country of Brasil serving his church. Chief Arnson currently resides in the City of Nogales.
