City of Nogales set to expand curbside recycling program

Nogales, AZ—The City of Nogales is set to expand its residential curbside recycling pilot program to several more neighborhoods beginning June 4, 2012 following a successful recycling pilot program.

“The results of the pilot program have been very positive,” said City Manager Shane Dille. “We are hopeful that we can get similar results in the neighborhoods that will begin curbside recycling in June.”

Residential curbside recycling will become available in the neighborhoods of Nogales West, Monte Carlo, Villa San Simon, Mariposa Manor, Mariposa Hills, Vista del Cielo, Royal Road, Beatus Estates, and all neighborhoods adjacent to East Patagonia Highway. The program will begin the week of June 4, 2012.

“Our recent citizen survey revealed that residents want to recycle. As a result we are working hard to implement a program that will be beneficial to the City, its residents, and the environment,” added Dille.

The new program consists of regular trash on the first collection of the week, either Monday or Tuesday, and recyclable materials only on the second collection of the week, either Thursday or Friday.

If the grey bin is not enough capacity on regular trash collection day, then residents can also use the blue bin for trash only on regular trash day.

Clean, dry, and loose recyclable materials will be collected in the blue bin on recycle day. Recyclable materials include plastic bottles, jugs, and containers, cardboard boxes, aluminum and steel cans, and any type of paper. Please do not put recyclable materials in plastic bags.

If nonrecyclable materials are placed in the blue can on the second collection day of the week, then the trash will not be collected and the resident may receive a violation notice.

City staff will be available at a variety of locations in the coming weeks to explain the recycling program and answer residents’ questions and concerns. The City of Nogales will host a Town Hall meeting at the Mariposa Manor Community Center on May 15 at 6:00 pm, located at 945 W Manor Drive in Nogales. Another Town Hall meeting will be held May 22 at 6:00 pm at the Abundant Life Church on East Patagonia Highway, located at 1380 E Patagonia Highway in Nogales.

City staff will also be present at an informational table at Challenger Elementary School on May 17 beginning at 5:30 pm, located at 901 E Calle Mayer in Nogales. Furthermore, an informational flier will be mailed to all residents in the May utility bill.

“We are reaching out to all affected residents before the recycling program begins in June,” further stated Dille. “We invite all interested residents to join us at our town hall meetings and in this recycling effort.”

In a presentation to the City Council during its regular meeting in April, the success of the recycling pilot program was announced. On average, around 50% of all residents in the Valle Verde, Villa Hermosa, and Meadow Hills neighborhoods recycled on a weekly basis.

Nearly 4,180 pounds of recyclable material were diverted from the landfill weekly, saving the City in total more than $2,000 from tipping fees over the five month trial period. Most notably, the new recycle program does not increase department operational costs.

The initial pilot program was successful because residents participated and presorted recyclable materials from regular trash in their homes. The success of the new expanded program will depend on the same participation of residents in the affected neighborhoods.
