Police Officer Jesus Cordova was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a carjacking suspect near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Mesa Verde Drive at approximately 2:45 pm on April 27, 2018. As Officer Cordova approached the suspect, the suspect opened fire on Officer Cordova and struck him multiple times with an assault rifle. Officer Cordova succumbed to his injuries at the local hospital. The suspect was apprehended after a short flight from pursuing law enforcement officers. He was taken into custody. Officer Cordova had served with the Nogales Police Department for one year and had previously served with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. He is survived by his three children and expectant wife.

SGT Bermudez began his career in Law Enforcement with the Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office as a Communications Officer. He later attended the Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center (ALETA) and after completing a rigorous 11 week training period, returned to the Santa Cruz County Patrol Division as a Deputy Sheriff. In 1990, Deputy Bermudez joined the Nogales Police Department and began his career as a Nogales Police Officer. He was assigned to the Patrol Division as a Police Officer, a Canine Officer assigned to the Patrol Division, a Detective assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division, a Narcotics Agent assigned to the Santa Cruz County Metro Task Force, and a Nogales Police Explorer Supervisor. In 2001, he was promoted to the position of Sergeant. As a Sergeant, he continued his success in Law Enforcement. He was assigned to the Charlie Squad as a Patrol Supervisor, he was in charge of the Canine Division, and the Supervisor for the Nogales Police Advisor Program. In 2003, Sergeant Bermudez tragically lost his life in a motorcycle traffic accident. Sergeant Bermudez will always be remembered as an officer that devoted his life to his family and Law Enforcement.

Officer Ayon began his career in Law Enforcement with the Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office. In 1989, Officer Ayon began his career as a Nogales Police Officer. He was assigned to the Patrol Division as a Patrol Officer and a Canine Officer. Officer Ayon was the first officer assigned to Canine Magnum a Narcotics Canine for the Nogales Police Department. In 1994, Officer Ayon tragically lost his life. Officer Ayon will always be remembered as an individual who devoted his life to his family and Law Enforcement.

Special Officer Hank Frost was shot and killed by a gambler who was seeking revenge against him for an incident that had occurred the previous month.On November 11th, 1888, Officer Frost had arrested a gambler for disturbing the peace. As he escorted the man to jail, the man pulled out a knife and attempted to attack him. Officer Frost fatally shot the man. On December 30th, 1888, Officer Frost was sitting in a saloon when a man entered and shot Officer Frost with a revolver without warning. The man fled over the border into Mexico. It is not known if he was ever apprehended. Officer Frost was a U.S. Army veteran.
