Historic Nogales, a diverse and friendly community of 21,000, seeks a City Magistrate who desires to work in a dynamic, cross-cultural environment. The City Magistrate is responsible for presiding over a full-time court calendar that consists of criminal misdemeanor, civil traffic and protective/restraining orders. The City Magistrate has full administrative responsibilities over the city court and personnel. This position shares duties with other judges within the county with respect to seeing incarcerated jail inmates at their initial appearance.
The classification is non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position. Work is performed in accordance with the provisions of applicable laws and is subject to review by a higher court. The Presiding City Magistrate is appointed by the Nogales City Council to a four (4) year term. This position may receive administrative direction/guidance from the City Manager and the presiding judge of the superior court.
Minimum requirements include graduation from an accredited college or university with a Juris Doctorate, and seven (7) years experience as a lawyer, judge, or hearing officer in criminal or traffic cases. Must be a member in good standing in the State Bar of Arizona. Previous judicial experience in misdemeanor cases is preferred.
