Special Operations

The Nogales Fire Department provides the following special operations with highly qualified staff. The Department also coordinates with surrounding public safety agencies, such as Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, Nogales Suburban Fire District, Rio Rico Fire District, Tubac Fire District, and others.

Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)

Our department has a specially equipped HAZMAT response truck and team to protect the health and safety of the public and the environment by assuring that hazardous materials are properly handled and stored. Hazaradous materials include any solid, liquid, or gas that can harm people, other living organisms, property, or the environment. Some examples include materials that may be radioactive, explosive, toxic, corrosive, biohazardous, an oxidizer, an asphyxiant, a pathogen, an allergen, or may have other characteristics that render it hazardous in specific circumstances.

Wildland Rescue

Wildland rescue utilizes wildland firefighting techniques and tactics to control and/or extinguish large brush fires and urban interface fires, both in and around Nogales as well as around the state when on assistance assignments. Also, skilled personnel can be organized and dispatched into search teams to find lost or missing people in the mountainous regions surrounding Nogales.

Rope Rescue

Rope rescue uses various devices, mechanisms, and other specialized equipment to reach victims and safely recover them. Such rescue types can be used in environments ranging from structures in an ubran setting, to wilderness mountain rescues, and even cave rescues. Rescue should not be attempted by individuals who have not been formally trained.

Swift Water Rescue

Nogales is especially prone to rapidly rising washes and streams, which can cause people to suddenly get caught in swift water. Swift water rescue involves the use of specially trained personnel, ropes, and mechanical systems that are often much more robust than those used in standard rope rescue. The main goal is to deflect the water’s power to assist in the rescue of the endangered person, as in most situations there is no easy way to overcome the power of the water.

Please ensure children and pets stay away from washes and streams, even when dry. Rain may be falling or water is somehow filling the wash upstream that you cannot see, and suddenly the wash gets filled with water. This rapid rise in the water level can lead to serious harm to person or property. BE WATER SAFE!
